After intense stints of client work, which I totally love but it’s a lot of work, and especially after long retouching days of sitting, I am busting at the seams to get out in the side and play with nature. I had some much needed time out and about after been cooped up a bit too long. It’s a long “aaaaaaaaaah” after I’ve been good and gotten my work done. Breaks are important:) I’m particularly lucky to have wonderful weather and the breathtaking scenery of Los Angeles beaches and cliffs. So very “aaaaaaaaah”…

In honor of the heat that has settled in to stay in southern california, I had a gorgeous los angeles lifestyle beach shoot with two lovely young models. There’s something about a day by the sea, toes in the sand. It’s simultaneously churning and tumultuous, but somehow incredibly calming. Here are some photos from our day so you can visually join us on our beach-capade!

Hooray for spring, which is pretty much the same as summer here in Los Angeles! There’s no easier way to shake the stresses of daily life than to take a breather and have a lovely, delicious picnic in perfect weather. The light dapples through trees, the fruit is plump and ripe, the cheeses are indulgent and stink to high heaven, and the wine in full-bodied and rich. Deep inhales of nature and oxygen, the clean yet warm smell of trees and leaves, take a beat from this hectic life and have yourself a rustic picnic. Not sure where to start? No worries, it’s easy and totally worth it.

1- Good Company and a beautiful day: The most essential component to a divine picnic!

2- Lovely, tender meats like Prosciutto di Parma and a seasoned hard salami.

3- High-end cheeses that can hold their own like an aged parmigiano reggiano and a triple cream brie.

4- A nice crusty, rustic bread (I like a kalamata olive bread here) with a simple dipping oil made from olive oil, red pepper flakes, and fresh minced rosemary and thyme. Don’t forget the cornichons (pickles) for a nice crisp bite!

5- Plump ripe berries like raspberries and blueberries drizzled with local raw honey.

6- Some wildflowers, a blanket and some great red wine to finish the mood.

ENJOY!!!

When life gets crazy and I can’t escape the maelstrom of my own whirling thoughts, it’s time for a little hike. A restorative stroll through nature is the most essential ritual to revive my mind and provide a clarity of perspective. If you’re stuck in the office today and unable to escape to the outdoors, I hope you can take a brief respite from the daily grind while scrolling through some of the gorgeous scenes I stumble upon in my attempts to escape reality.

You may notice with these shots that we were not victims of the polar vortex this winter. Much of January was in the 70s with stints in the 80s. Once you get pampered with weather like this, there’s no going back. Given this gift of warmth, we took advantage of the beautiful, low hanging winter sun and had a little hike at Malibu Creek with the lovely and charismatic duo Jack and Alysse. There’s nothing like a dose of vitamin D and stretching your body strolling through nature to get your head right. It puts some real life in lifestyle photography!

Hey Everyone! Things have a been a bit crazy over here but, happily, this weekend I’ll be jetting to Nantucket for my summer art show opening. This Friday night at the Hostetler Gallery (42 Centre Street, Nantucket, MA) enjoy some wine, live  jazz and wonderful art! It’s a great time and well worth the ferry ride to the island. If you find yourself in the area, come join us and say “hi”!

I always forget how stinkin’ cute Nantucket is. I remembered exactly how cute it is last year when I disembarked the ferry with my roller board suitcase and walked the few blocks along the brick roads to the gallery. Adorable. It is a much needed dose of New England for this weary western gal. Bring on the flood of nostalgia. Even better, this weekend I get to walk down that cobblestone memory lane with my best friend, who I don’t get to see nearly often enough with the 3,000+ miles between us. Oh the lives we lead!

Today I’d like to share some of this year’s new pieces with you guys but many 2012 prints are for sale this year as well. Check out the “personal art” section of my website to see what is currently for sale and give me a holler if you’d like info on pricing, editioning etc. or if you just have something to say!!

To give a little background on the new stuff, one series entitled the “smudge” series showcases classic still life sets with a bit of finger painting in the foreground. Smudge is an understatement to say the least, these works became a fun experiment with texture, light and scale in a treatment I had never considered or seen before in photography. What do you think?

The swirly color series “Sweetscapes” is a study of dye in spun sugar. The resulting landscapes have flow and motion, evoking many visual parallels to nature. I enjoyed playing with the tumultuous, vibrant scenes that unfolded before my eyes. Fun stuff!

Time to pack! Hope you enjoy the pieces in this year’s summer show!

So I’ll have you know I put on my big girl pants for this recipe! HA! I can be a bit squeamish when it comes to slimy foods and raw meats. I’m getting better but still tend to opt for pre-shelled, de-veined, and de-yucked (I know, not a word but it should be!) ingredients when I get the chance. This time I sucked it up, shoved my hands into the cold slimy abyss, and peeled and de-veined these little suckers like any self-respecting grown woman should. I will say, it was worth it! I broiled this recipe but you can also grill it for an easy clean-up free option.

This year I’ve been traveling a ton domestically, but it’s been years since I had a proper vacation on an island somewhere. As summer winds down I’m taking some time to play pretend. So  put on a steel drum band, flip off those shoes and let’s cook on island time!

  • 1 pound jumbo shrimp, peeled and de-veined
  • 2 tablespoon orange juice
  • juice from 1 lime
  • 2 tablespoon coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • pinch cayenne
  • 1 tablespoon smashed garlic
  • salt and pepper

~ Process all ingredients except the shrimp in a food processor until combined.

~ In a bowl, combine marinade and shrimp and toss to coat.

~ Preheat broiler on high.

~ Thread shrimp onto skewers and place on a broiler pan coated with cooking spray. Top with remaining caribbean marinade.

~ Broil 2 minutes on each side taking care not to overcook.

ENJOY!!!

Hey everyone! So things have been full speed ahead over here lately. It’s been an incredible ride! I just got back from my show opening on the picturesque and adorably New England island of Nantucket. The show opening was a huge success with an enormous turn out. People were flooding the sidewalk outside the gallery and stayed and discussed the pieces for hours. It was overwhelmingly positive and quite incredible to hear the discussions people were having about the work. Pretty dang cool!

Anyway, there hasn’t been any time to shoot some pretty food for ya’ll but I wanted to share some quick happy snappy photos of the gallery space and the press release from the gallery with you guys. I don’t have photos from the actual opening (I was too busy talking and drinking!) but I imagine with all the people none of the work would be visible anyway!

If you find yourself on Nantucket this summer, please stop in and visit Susan to see work from myself and 3 other extremely talented artists. If you do, be sure to let me know what you think!

Have a lovely week!
